The Rokusho Matcha Set gives you everything you need to whisk and serve matcha, apart from the tea itself. It includes a 450 ml ceramic pouring bowl, an 80-prong bamboo whisk, a ceramic whisk holder that matches the bowl, and a bamboo scoop. It works just as well for a daily matcha ritual as it does as a thoughtful gift for someone who appreciates good tea and beautiful ceramics.
A Matcha Bowl with a Pouring Spout
The Rokusho bowl takes the form of a yuzamashi, also called a kuzusara. This spouted vessel comes from Japanese tea culture: you whisk matcha in it and then pour it into a cup or a serving bowl. The shaped spout gives a steady, controlled pour and reduces drips. That makes it especially handy when you’re making matcha for more than one person, or when you’re pouring whisked matcha over milk for a latte.
A yuzamashi is traditionally also used to cool water. You pour boiling water into the bowl and let it come down in temperature before brewing more delicate teas such as sencha or gyokuro. You can read more about matcha and how it’s prepared on Wikipedia.
A Glaze That’s Different on Every Bowl
The bowl combines a dark matte ceramic surface with a glossy reactive glaze. The colours shift from deep black to pale blue and turquoise, and the fine speckles are reminiscent of a starry night sky. A reactive glaze develops its pattern during firing, so every bowl turns out slightly different and yours may not look exactly like the photos. Each bowl is a one-off.
Bamboo Whisk, Holder and Scoop
The 80-prong bamboo whisk (chasen) whips matcha into a smooth, creamy froth. The ceramic whisk holder is designed to match the bowl, and drying the whisk on the holder helps its prongs keep their shape. The bamboo scoop (chashaku) is the traditional tool for measuring out matcha powder.
How to Make Matcha in the Rokusho Bowl
- Warm the bowl with hot water, pour the water out and dry the bowl.
- Add sifted matcha and a little hot water at about 70–80 °C, then whisk until smooth.
- Top up with water to taste and pour through the spout into your cup or tea bowl.
The set pairs well with our organic matcha tea, which you can drink on its own or use in a matcha latte.
Care
Wash the ceramic bowl by hand in warm water. Avoid abrasive cleaners and sudden temperature changes. The bamboo whisk and scoop should also be washed by hand and must not go in the dishwasher. Before use, soak the whisk tips briefly in warm water. After use, leave the whisk to dry on its holder so the prongs keep their shape.

What is a yuzamashi, or matcha pouring bowl?

How big is the Rokusho bowl?
